Roger Lumsden — North Waikato

Roger farms a dairy and beef unit in North Waikato - land he's worked for a very long time. A recent change in farming operation left him short on space, with machinery stacked around the district instead of at home where it belonged. He needed an implement shed that he could easily build himself, to help keep the overall project costs down.

Roger found Alpine through marketing in the mail and had planned to explore his options at National Fieldays. What sold him on Alpine was simple: the ease of construction, the building consent handled for him, and other Alpine owners with nothing bad to say.

"I've actually spoken to two or three people since I started this one who have done Alpine sheds. They've all seemed simple. I haven't heard any complaints from anyone."

Ease of construction.  Roger completed around 80% of the build himself. He was impressed by the quality materials and the simple girt and purlin bracket systems that made the process simple. 

 Bays wide enough for modern machinery.  "Machinery is getting bigger. Half the year we end up running duals on tractors. Having bays with a clear four metres or eight metres wide, just to be able to drive straight in — that's one of the other things." 

Customisable shed design:  Roger needed a 15m deep shed to increase his storage capacity.  

"A lot of kitset sheds were only 10 to 12 metres deep, whereas I really wanted to go deeper - just so you can get a little more in the front of the shed. Implement in the front, tractor and implement behind."

Building consent management.  Alpine's in-house consent team handled the building consent process, saving Roger the time and hassle of dealing with the council himself.  

"Because I needed an engineer's ticket and a permit for this one, obviously the guys at Alpine were really easy and really keen to do it, and everything just fell into place. No issues with getting consents - everything ticked the box."

Complete kitset delivery.  "It (the kitset) all came as one truckload - easy to unload. Just simple, all the way." 

Building the shed himself meant Roger leaned on the team whenever a question came up — and was impressed by the responsiveness of the team. 

"Scott was our project manager, pretty much on the phone straight away with the answers. And if he didn't, he had them in five minutes."

The shed did exactly what Roger needed: centralised his gear, gave him room to move, and is built to last for generations. 

"Like all investments, it's hopefully here for longer than I am."
