The Situation

Matt Broughan runs Liquid Action, an irrigation business out of Renwick, servicing horticulture and viticulture clients right across Marlborough. Eleven years in, the yard was reaching capacity. Equipment was seasonal, and there wasn't the room to hold it all on-site.

Matt also wanted a workshop of his own - somewhere to maintain machinery, teach the local kart club's kids to weld, and keep his own toys.

Why Alpine

Matt went with Alpine for the process as much as the product. Plans came back fast, and changes were made without fuss, working until the design was nailed. Matt was building his Forever Shed, and he wanted to do it once. And do it right.

"People from Alpine were really easy to deal with right from the start. Plans came back to us really quickly, and when we wanted things changed, they changed things until we got it bang on."

What Mattered to Them

Matt wanted a shed designed around exactly how he'd use it.

A 20-metre Clear-span. Matt needed three 6m service vehicles parked in a row in a single bay, with full-width shelving down the back wall.

"We went with the 20m clearspan rafter design. I wanted to maximise the wall space across the back of the building with storage shelves that extended right across the full width."

Maximum Usable Space. No hip beams meant no obstructions, providing maximum usable space and allowing the racking to run all the way up to the roofline.

"Not having to contend with [hip beams] means our racking system can go all the way to the roof. The whole space just works better for storage as a result."

Designed to Endure, Built to Last. In a high-wind zone, the shed needed to stand up to the elements for generations to come. A quiet working environment mattered too, with the timber poles and framing acting as a natural sound barrier - absorbing sound rather than amplifying it the way a rolled-steel shed would.

"We occasionally get high winds through here, so we up-spec'd the roller doors accordingly. There's minimal rattle, minimal noise, even when it's really blowing outside."

A Customised Mancave Area. Plywood lining and custom lighting turned Matt's mancave side of the shed into a proper base for the kart club.

"The workshop is going to be a real asset for the kids coming through the club. We'll maintain our own machines and help them upskill with mechanical and welding knowledge."

The Result

20.0m wide x 25.0m long
5 x 5.0m wide bays
4.4m high, up to 6.3m high at the apex
1 Roller Shutter door - 4.7m high x 4.4m wide
3 Series 2 Roller doors - 3.8m high x 3.6m wide

The kitset arrived on time with nothing missing, and Matt's overall experience was "absolutely superb."

"In terms of the build process, it was absolutely amazing, so easy. People from Alpine were really easy to deal with right from the start. Plans came back to us really quickly, and when we wanted things changed, they changed things until we got it bang right."

The order went in on a tight delivery window and arrived on time, the entire shed fitting on the back of one truck.

"It turned up on time, really, really easy to build, there were no problems. There was nothing really missing. The plans were great; everything was just really, really simple.

The entire Alpine Buildings experience has been absolutely superb from start to finish."
