Marty Brodie — Timaru

Over the years, Marty had built up a collection worth protecting: classic cars, bikes, kayaks, and general outdoor gear. What he didn't have was anywhere to put it all.

He went out to the market to explore the different shed options, but he wasn't going to settle for the cheapest one.

Marty had always known of Alpine, but he did his research anyway, comparing several companies before deciding. Alpine wasn't the cheapest quote he received, and it didn't need to be. For a shed he wanted to get right, quality was the deciding factor.

"Alpine certainly weren't the cheapest; they weren't pretending to be the cheapest. But the reason I chose them was, there's a few different reasons... First and foremost, they did a solid job. The timber was decent; the steel was decent. Everything felt like it would last a long time."

Quality.  Marty wanted a shed that would last, not just look the part on day one. The quality of materials such as the timber poles, pre-dried timber framing, and thick structural steel rafters sold him.

"They did a really decent, solid shed. The timber was decent; the steel was decent. The materials were heavy and felt like they'd last a long time."

Custom Design.  Working through the layout wasn't a box-ticking exercise. Marty worked directly with Alpine's Sales and Install teams to get the right design.

"I worked with Brad initially from the sales team, and he worked with me on the design. We met with Jack, one of their foremen, and discussed the functionality of the design, what would work well and what wouldn't. We settled on a 9 x 12m shed with a lean-to down the back."

Timber Frame Over Rolled Steel.  Marty had seen rolled-steel frame sheds rust over time. Structural steel rafters paired with timber framing solved that problem and made the shed easier to work with long-term.

"I was concerned about the steel often rusting over time, whereas the timber construction, well, there won't be that issue. The timber (framing) I also prefer because if you want to screw something to the wall you can just put it up yourself, rather than steel, which isn't as easy to work with long term."

Getting the Details Right.  The shed had already been signed off with five-rib cladding, until a phone call changed Marty's mind.

"Brad rang me one day and said, ' How about we change this to corrugated iron? I hadn't even thought about that. The exterior cladding of a shed is what you look at forever.

To Marty, this isn’t just a shed. It’s a purpose-built mancave to store his assets - from the classic cars to the bikes and kayaks.

Quality timber poles, timber framing, and plywood lining provide a quiet working environment and make the shed a nice place to be.
