Shed Maintenance: What To Do and Why It Matters.

Written by Brad Person | October 29 2025

A good shed should last a lifetime. But even the best ones need a bit of upkeep.

Simple maintenance goes a long way towards protecting your investment. It keeps your shed looking sharp, working as it should, and standing strong through every season.

In this article, we’ll cover the key things you need to know to keep your shed in top condition - without overcomplicating it.

Why maintaining your shed matters

Basic maintenance helps prevent small issues from turning into big problems. A clogged gutter might not seem like a big deal - until water starts pooling. A loose bolt can lead to a door that won’t close properly. Ignored long enough, these little things can wear down the structure, affect functionality, and cause unnecessary wear and tear.

Maintenance also keeps your shed looking sharp. A tidy, well-kept shed adds value to your property and pride to your place. Whether it's for farm gear, classic cars, or your business setup, it deserves to be looked after.

Put simply, a little effort now saves money, time, and hassle down the line.

Seasonal shed maintenance checklist

Every season brings different challenges. By getting into a routine of checking a few key things, you’ll stay ahead of wear and tear.

Autumn and Winter

  • Clear the gutters: Remove leaves and debris to prevent blockages and water damage.
  • Check roof and flashings: Look for signs of damage, loose screws or gaps where water could get in. Make sure drainage is working well.
  • Inspect seals and joins: Look around windows and doors for any gaps or wear. Reseal if needed.
  • Trim back trees and plants: Keep vegetation at least a metre away from the shed to stop moisture build-up and pest access.

Spring and Summer

  • Wash the exterior: Clean areas that don’t get directly washed by rain, like under eaves, sheltered external walls, and roller doors. Use a nylon brush and pressure washer (under 1000psi).
  • Touch-up paint: Check for scratches or dents in the cladding if it has been hit, and deal with any bare spots to stop rust.
  • Check moving parts: Roller doors, hinges, locks - lubricate them and make sure they’re working smoothly. Get your doors serviced by professionals to ensure warranties are maintained and maximise the lifespan of your shed.
  • Ventilate: Open up the shed doors to air it out and reduce moisture and condensation.
  • Look for pests: Watch for droppings or chewed items. Act quickly if you spot anything.

All year round

  • Sweep and tidy the interior: A clean shed is less inviting to pests and easier to spot issues early.
  • Stop dirt from building up around the base of the shed: Make sure the iron cladding isn’t touching soil or gravel to avoid rust.

It doesn’t take long, but doing these things once each season will make a big difference in how your shed holds up.

Long-term tips to keep your shed looking like new

Keeping your shed in top shape isn’t about big, expensive work. It’s about small, regular habits that make a lasting difference over time.

Here’s what that looks like:

  • Stick to the seasonal checks: The more consistent you are, the less likely you’ll face repairs to anything stored inside, or the shed itself.
  • Address issues early: If you spot rust, leaks, or damage, fix it straight away. Waiting will only make it worse and more costly to fix.
  • Use the right tools and products: When washing your shed or touching up paint, always follow the manufacturer’s advice. Avoid harsh chemicals or high-pressure washing that could damage the cladding.
  • Store smart: Keep damp gear outside. Don’t let rubbish accumulate, as it invites pests.
  • Book a door check-up: Even if your roller doors are rarely used, it’s worth having a specialist service them to ensure they keep running smoothly.
  • Keep it dry and aired out: Good airflow is your best defence against mould and mildew, especially in humid months.

Shed maintenance doesn't need to be complicated or take very long. A little maintenance, carried out regularly, is the best way to avoid costly headaches down the track.

A good shed will last a lifetime. Or two. But like anything that’s built to last, it needs a bit of looking after.

Sticking to simple maintenance like cleaning gutters, checking the roof, and keeping things tidy helps your shed stay solid, weatherproof, and working like it should. It also means you’ll avoid bigger issues down the line.  A little care goes a long way!

Note: This advice is general in nature. Refer to manufacturer specifications and warranty documents for procedures and intervals of maintenance to maximise your shed's lifespan. Any questions, reach out to the shed supplier for confirmation.
